Jimmy Prince Street Naming
Michael Quinn
Todd Prince reminded me today of his father’s street naming ceremony which will be taking place on Saturday July 8th at 1pm. The corner of Mermaid Ave and 15th street will be appropriately named after Jimmy Price the sweetheart of a man and butcher whose store Major Meats graced that block. Whenever Todd and I connect memories of his dad flood my mind. For many years I would stop by to see Jimmy at his store for a two inch prime rib eye steak, freshly cut bacon and of course his famous murder burger which he would cook up for you in a pan with a small amount of water topped off with Cooper cheese! Jimmy would always have a story ready for me about what was currently going on in the neighborhood as well a story related to Coney Island’s spectacular history.
Jimmy told me that one day someone came into his shop hungry and wanted a burger. However, the customer’s stove wasn’t working. So Jimmy grinded up a half pound of ground chuck and cooked it for him right in the store. At that moment Jimmy Prince’s murder burger was born! I was hooked!
I know that many friends, family members and customers of Jimmy will be attending the ceremony sharing their own stories of the kindest man and greatest shop owner that I’ve ever known. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there to share our stories.
