Petition to Stop Ferry Landing Proposed for Creek
Many Coney Island residents are terrified of the prospects of a ferry landing on the creek by Kaiser Park. Not only is the creek dangerously polluted with areas that may contain UXO’s aka bomb shells it also will create more congestion as visitors and residents take shuttle buses throughout the area including all the way to the amusement area. They fear that their only true park will be disturbed and littered by tourists making their way to the ocean side. Toxic sentiments from the creek dredging will be blowing throughout the very air they breath.
So why not build a landing on the oceanside? Maybe it makes too much sense? Is cost an issue? Why not lease concession space around the landing to pay for the maintenance of the pier? Just like how they did things in the good ol’ days of Coney Island. Do Coney Island residents want thousands of visitors traveling aimlessly through their blocks from a creekside dock to the oceanside disturbing their community? Find one that does. Are tidal currents an issue? Some may say well Rockaway Beach doesn’t have an oceanside landing. Their landing is in Jamaica Bay. You can’t compare Rockaway Beach to the Coney Island Beach. When was the time you witnessed someone surfing in Coney Island? The Coney Island Beach is essentially the same tame body of water as Jamaica Bay.
During the 1800’s three piers were operating on the oceanside of Coney Island bringing visitors from as far away as Newark, New Jersey. We don’t have the resources or means to figure out how to do that today?
An oceanside ferry service is the only option that will safely benefit residents and visitors alike.
Some promenant and influential community leaders have been vocal about the plans. Assemblymember Mathlyde Frontus is opposed to a creek side ferry out of concern for the safety and health of her constituents.
Coney Island activists Pamela Pettyjohn and Charles Denson have started a petition asking the New York Economic Development Corporation to not construct a landing on the creekside at Kaiser Park.
An online version of the petition is also available below to sign including their valid points made for it’s opposition.
An oceanside ferry landing is the only rational choice for the safety and betterment of the Coney Island Community.
