Boardwalk Turns 95 while gaining Recognition
After turning 95 the Riegelmann Boardwalk has finally received the recognition it deserves. After a 4 year effort under the leadship of Councilmember Mark Treyger the boardwalk at Coney Island has been granted designated landmark status. Hopefully this will help prevent any further alterations of the iconic walkway.
95 years ago yesterday the boardwalk opened, it was named after then Brooklyn Borough President Edward Riegelmann. The Borough President along with Governor Smith and other dignitaries had a luncheon at the Shelbourne Hotel. The festivities included a military airshow and evening fireworks followed by a 4 day Spring Mardi Grad with a bathing suit contest as well as a baby parade! Many newspapers covered the spectacular event (See Pittsburgh Gazette).
Now that the boardwalk opened the beach to everyone Coney Island officially became the People’s Playground!
