Shark sighting at Coney Island Beach!
At least two sharks were spotted near Steeplechase Pier in Coney Island this morning forcing closure of the beach within that area. According to a Parks Department statement “Out of an abundance of safety, Parks closes beaches to swimmers when sharks are in the immediate area. Because sharks have been sighted in certain areas of Coney Island Beach today, Parks has closed specific stretches of beach and will continue to monitor the situation.”
Sharks have been seen often this season in the northeast. Water temperature is at a balmy 72 degrees. Over the weekend a shark was spotted at nearby Rockaway Beach forcing closures at different sections of the beach.
No cause for worry, you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than attacked by a shark. 30 times more likely! A tornado? 20 times more likely!
Now a sharknado is a whole other story!
