Welcome Nathan and Ida Handwerker Way
The proposal to name the south west corner of Stillwell ave. and Surf after Nathan’s Famous original owners has been passed by the city council today.
The Coney Island Blog first reported that the corner of the original Nathan’s Famous proposed to be named Nathan and Ida Handwerker Way was passed by Community Board 13.
The proposal was pushed through the city council today by Council Member Mark Treyger.
Nathan’s started at a 5 foot stand on the corner of Surf ave. and Schweikerts Walk. According to the original owner’s grandson Lloyd Handwerker, Nathan paid a pretty penny to purchase the corner of Stillwell and Surf back in 1936 out of fear that former employer and rival Feltman’s was going to take over the property.
By 1961 Nathan’s Famous expanded to take over the purchased corner.
Congratulations to the Handwerker Family for this well deserved and long overdue honor.
