Pro Boxing coming to Ford Amphitheater!
According to RingTV.com professional boxing is coming to the new Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk.
“Errol Spence Jr. will try to make another splash in New York when he faces Italy’s Leonard Bundu (33-1-2, 12 KOs) Aug. 21 in a world title eliminator. Splash is the operative word because Spence-Bundu is slated for the shiny new outdoor venue by the Atlantic Ocean– the Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York, multiple sources confirmed to RingTV.com. Spence-Bundu will headline a PBC on NBC Sunday night broadcast.”
Professional boxing is nothing new to Coney Island. In fact on June 9, 1899 “The Boilermaker” Jim Jeffries defeated Bob Fitzsimmons for the heavyweight championship at a venue with more than twice the capacity of the new Ford Amphitheater. The event had taken place at the Coney Island Sporting Club where the New York Aquarium now stands. The Coney Island Heavyweight fight was documented in the video below.
A Jim Jeffries signed portrait can be found at Mc Sorley’s Old Ale House in the East Village, NYC. The famously ancient saloon where Coney Island Blog editor and historian Michael Quinn was once an employee and where Coney Island resident Woody Guthrie spent many afternoons with guitar in hand.
