Gun Detection Program Reaches Coney Island
Mayor de Blasio’s gun detection program will be extended to Coney Island and in much needed areas within the 60 Precinct.
According to the Daily News:
“A successful gun detection program that alerts cops to weapons even before a 911 call is made will now cover over twice as much of the city, Mayor de Blasio will announce on Thursday.
The expanded coverage will cost an extra $3 million a year, and is included as part of the mayor’s 2017 preliminary budget being released Thursday.”
Council Member Mark Treyger released a statement on social media yesterday:
“Can now officially announce that the effective shotspotter technology is coming to the 60th Precinct. Thank you to my great colleague and Chair of the Public Safety Committee Vanessa L. Gibson for your strong support of this initiative’s expansion to my district. And thank you to Commissioner Bratton and Mayor de Blasio for granting our request to provide law enforcement and the district attorney’s office an important tool to combat gun violence. Also want to extend my thanks to Edwin Cosme, Chair of CB13’s Public Safety committee for his strong advocacy in favor of shotspotter from Day1. And of course my colleagues Assemblywoman Pamela Harris and Senator Diane J. Savino who have been so vocal and supportive of additional security measures.Team effort once again produces a positive result.
Shotspotter uses sensors placed atop locations that detect shots fired, alert 911 automatically, and can help trace time and origin of the shots. Residents are still encouraged to call 911 if they see or hear something, but we’ve found that in many cases no one calls 911 when shots are fired unless someone gets hit.
There’s more work to do, but this is a very big deal for our effort to combat violence.”
This is how it works:
