Cuomo Recommends B&B for National Register of Historic Places

On Monday New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo recommended that the newly restored B&B Carousell be labeled on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The Carousell’s foundation was built by legendary amusement ride inventor/maker William Mangels sometime during the early 20th century. During the recent restoration in Ohio, 20 layers of paint were peeled off of the Charles Carmel carved horses and re-painted in their original colors. The lone Marcus Illions Lincoln Centennial horse, with it’s garishly adorned exterior, looks like something the pharaoh in Egypt may have owned.

Now if we could only in have the Riegelmann Boardwalk designated as a place of historic significance.

  1. In giving the carousel landmark status, I’m all for it. But please, Coney Island, get the history straight. The frame, by Mangels, was indeed created in 1906. However, the carousel was NOT. It was put together by Dolle-Borrelli company in 1927 with the last of the stock of the Charles Carmel Carving shop. Thus the carousel, a total unit, was not created until 1927 using the 1906 Mangels frame.
