It was “Our”Estuary Day
While the weather was perfect for the 5th Annual Pet Day at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, on the other side at the creek local elementary school students celebrated the first annual “It’s My Estuary Day” by cleaning up sections of Coney Island Creek and Kaiser Park on Saturday.
Environmental group Making Waves sponsored the event to raise awareness of waterfront resources in the borough.
Children and adults were seen cleaning up the beach and participating in such activities as clading up in 180 pounds of diving gear and letting them touch hermit crabs and other marine life.
They are looking to raise money for a marine science barge featuring a laboratory for local schools.
Our friend and Coney Island Blog contributor Gene Ritter was there talking about the importance of saving the estuary and it’s marine life.
We joined Eddie Mark and Pamela Pettyjohn as they were getting dirty with the Coney Island Beautification Project which assists with planting trees and other plant life throughout Coney Island.
However, the most popular attraction for the kids were the hot dogs being served by Martin Bromberger with buns donated by Feltman’s of Coney Island.
