Coney Island Tours in Full Swing!
Coney Island Tours founder Michael Quinn has been quite busy recently booking his popular walking tours of Coney Island’s Amusement District. His tours are given year round, and can be booked seven days a week. “I feel like I have been giving tours of Brooklyn my entire life.” says the Brooklyn born Quinn. “It has only been during the past decade that I have been formalizing them.”
Last summer Quinn was booked nearly every day with his historic walking tours of the “People’s Playground.” Quinn not only works independently as a tour guide but also in partnership with Luna Park, which keeps him busy the entire summer!
According to Quinn” To be a legit tour guide in Coney Island you really should have been literally born in Brooklyn and have some childhood memories of the area, otherwise you are just reciting back what you read in some history book. There is nothing like a Brooklyn childhood. I remember when the original Thunderbolt, Tornado, and Cyclone roller coasters were standing at the same time and back when Nathan’s Famous was more like Katz’ Deli and less like Mc Donald’s!”
In addition to the walking tour Quinn helps plan the day for his guests and provides exceptional discounts for them throughout the amusement district. He helps make the Coney Island experience very affordable.
“I don’t receive funding, I don’t work as a non profit, which puts me at a disadvantage; I operate as a small business in every sense of the word” says Quinn.
Quinn emphasizes that just like him your tour guide needs to be licensed by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs. Professional tour guides carry their licenses with them at all times.
His walking tours are so popular that many people come back again every year!
“I have three tours booked for this Saturday alone. One gentleman is taking my tour for the second time and bringing different friends with him this time.”
Quinn has no problem handling larger crowds; as there is also no limit to the size of his tours.
“Last season I gave numerous tours of 116-120 people per outing”
” The last tour of the day I usually join my guests for a few pops at one of Coney Island’s numerous seaside bars. They like the fact that I hang out with them after the tour and continue to chat about Brooklyn history.”
How long does Quinn plan on giving his tours?
“Until every person in Brooklyn has taken the tour.”
“Twice.”
