Why the Cyclone is the World’s Best Roller Coaster
It’s not the tallest, longest, fastest, or even oldest roller coaster; however, the Cyclone is the best roller coaster in the world. Once you are sitting in that front car and the lever is released you transported into another place and time. As the car rises you look back across Surf ave. and imagine what this trip was like over 80 years ago as it’s riders got a breathtaking view of the original Luna Park in all of it’s glorious and incandescent radiance. As you look forward at the magnificent beach and ocean and towards the equally famous Wonder Wheel you are sharing the same view that thrilled riders took in some 87 years ago! That creaking sound adds to the experience. Once you reach the top there is that peaceful silence with a view of Brooklyn like no other! Then the drop! The screams! That cool Atlantic breeze blowing your hat off of your head!
How many other roller coasters have the ability to inspire people to have it’s image tattooed on someone’s arm? Just ask our friend Erik Knapp who traditionally camps out the night before to assure that first spot on opening day. Erik will proudly show you his tattoo of the world’s most famous roller coaster!
Yes, we were on hand to cheer Erik on yesterday morning!
How many roller coasters can claim that they were built on the location of the world’s first commercially successful roller coaster, L.A. Thompson’s 1884 Switchback Railway?
Charles Lindbergh claimed that riding the Cyclone was more thrilling than flying the Atlantic!
The Cyclone also has the miraculous ability to make mute people speak! Well occasionally. In 1948, Emilio Franco, who was mute since birth, was able to speak for the first time after riding the Cyclone. His first words? “I feel sick.”
So yes, the Cyclone of Coney Island is indeed the best roller coaster in the world.
I have been riding the Cyclone every season for the past 30 years. It is a rite of passage for a local Brooklyn kid to reach the height requirement to ride the World’s Best and Most Famous Roller Coaster!
I’m looking forward to riding it again!
Next weekend, when the weather is warmer.

Bollocks!
Due to family tradition, I have been riding the cyclone at least once a year for about 15 years. This roller coaster is rough, brutal and completely exhilarating. The drops are insane and your butt is off the seat most of the ride. Several years ago I spent a week in Disney and rode on every roller coaster. Two days after returning, I rode the cyclone and remember saying it was better than any roller coaster I’ve ever been on (I don’t mean to bash Disney cause it’s amazing and I love it). Ive been on roller coasters all over the world and still believe the Cyclone is the most thrilling ride I’ve ever been on!
