Update: Shore Theater Boarded Up Today

On October 8th of this year, TheConeyIslandBlog.com posted about the ongoing communication that we’ve had with the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), over the concern with the status of the landmarked and poorly maintained Coney Island Loews, also known as the Shore Theater Building on Surf Ave.
As a result of the windows being taken out by the homeless squatters who have since taken up residence in the theater, we’ve made it clear to the LPC that we felt it was urgent that the windows be boarded up. LPC Violations Officer Katie Rice told us that “since it is a landmarked building that they would prefer to wait for the windows to be replaced.” That may be true but our primary concern was that of safety. We feared that once this predicted polar vortex returned to our area that the new tenants would be setting fires to keep warm in their new home. Some of us remember the Coney Island of the 70’s.
This morning we witnessed workers finally boarding up the windows of the theater, a full month after we had last spoken with the LPC. So what’s the next step? Where do we go from here?

It seems that the Work of Boarding Up the Building has begun but is not Complete as a Dozen or so Windows on the Southern, Western, and Eastern Exposures remain to be Sealed.
The Sealing of the Window Openings is an Important Accomplishment in Saving the Landmark however, the Concern about Securing it from Further Intrusion and Vandalism seems to be Addressed yet.
