Coney Island News Ticker

Photo Of The Day

Probably our earliest Brooklyn memories. This is how we remember Coney Island during the 70’s.

This 1970’s picture of Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry and Punk journalist Lester Bangs in a now unrecognizable Coney Island is part of a book and exhibition by Blondie band member Chris Stein. It’s called Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie and the Advent of Punk.

If this picture doesn’t bring back childhood memories! Look closely and you will see the original Thunderbolt roller coaster behind Debbie’s head. Also Stauch’s Baths (currently PTB) with it’s accompanied vandalism made famous in the cult classic film, The Warriors. Today’s Tom’s Coney Island was Club Atlantis back in the day. You can also see the last days of my favorite childhood coaster, the Tornado (although I was too young to ride) directly behind Club Atlantis.

Unfortunately, this exhibition won’t be held in Coney Island. As a matter of fact nowhere near Coney Island. But rather London, England.

If you are visiting London anytime from November 5th-January 25th 2005, you can view the exhibition which will be located at Somerset House, London WC2.

While you are there you can also visit the Coney Island themed Brooklyn Bowl. Wouldn’t the Brooklyn Bowl fit in perfectly in the real Coney Island? Perhaps placed in one of Thor’s empty lots? We can only dream.

Brooklyn Bowl London @Rob Greig

It seems like London has a thing for our beloved Coney.

Two days ago Coney Island Tours hosted a group of four young men from where else?

London.
