Staten Island School Spends Three Days At Coney Island
How would you like to spend three days at Coney Island?
Well the Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School of Staten Island is doing just that! According to school teacher Ms. Valletta, “under the leadership of Principal Ms.Frey once a year our project-based learning school participates in what we call intensives, in which we dismiss regular academic classes and teach a unit of our choice.” This years’ choice? Three full days of learning and exploration at Brooklyn’s famed Coney Island!
Ms. Valletta’s class assisted by Mr. Gleitman, arrived Monday morning at Steeplechase Plaza where they were greeted by Coney Island Tours founder Michael Quinn along with a representative from Luna Park. Thanks to Luna Park the students were given a detailed tour of the newly restored B&B Carousell followed by an engaging hour tour of the Coney Island area by Mr. Quinn. They also stopped by the classic William’s Candy Store as well as Nathan’s Famous for some discounted hot dogs or for what us locals refer to as Coney Island Caviar.
Mr. Quinn assisted the school with planning the three days which includes a trip Tuesday to explore the aquatic wonders of the New York Aquarium as well as a planned tour of the Coney Island History Project on Wednesday.
According to Ms. Valletta her class will be presenting an amusement park style project in class on Friday.
